Academy Project Wins Lucky Strike Junior Award
Tony Jankowski has won the Lucky Strike Junior Designer Award 2018 for his final thesis on “Autonomous Construction for the Future”. He developed and realized the award-winning concept DUOTEC, centered around a mobile robotic system, at the Phoenix Design Academy under the mentorship of Principal Designer Sven Feustel.
The Lucky Strike Junior Designer Award ranks among the most coveted awards for up-and-coming talent in Germany. Students from 50 universities as well as numerous job starters had submitted their work at this year’s competition. Tony Jankowski from HTW Berlin has won the prize in the category “Product & Industry”.
DUOTEC represents a mobile robotic system for realizing extremely lightweight and stable architectural structures following examples taken from nature. One of the robots will build individual modules of a structure which are then combined and their surfaces seamlessly locked in place by a second robot.
The panel of jurors with its chairman Prof. Johann H. Tomforde presented these arguments for their decision:
“The Bachelor Thesis presented by Tony Jankowski entitled ‘Autonomous Construction: Innovative Tools in the Construction Process’ is regarded by us jurors – after comprehensive discussion – as a groundbreaking design method for the area of ‘Product & Industry’. Constructions derived from bionics were generated from fibres and composite materials right on site by the mobile robotic system DUOTEC, saving resources and utilising state-of-the-art coiling and printing techniques. We can foresee entirely novel and at the same time sustainable product design possibilities for such methods and construction approaches.”
The award-winning ceremony took place on 24 November 2018 at stilwerk Hamburg. There, the successful design works are exhibited until 8 December 2018.
The Lucky Strike Design Award has a historical importance for Phoenix Design. In 1998, only eleven years after founding their studio, Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr were honored with the prestigious design award for their lifetime achievement.
